Real Ear Measurement in Altamonte Springs

Your hearing aids are verified by one of our Hearing Aid Specialists, Jaysee or Toni. A probe microphone measures the sound your hearing aids deliver in your ear canal, so we can program them to your prescriptive targets rather than a software estimate.

What to expect

What happens during Real Ear Measurement

Grace or Francesca will greet you at the front desk and get you settled. Bring your hearing aids, and your visit then moves through four parts.

  1. Step 1

    Ear exam

We examine your ear canals and eardrums with an otoscope. Earwax can block the probe tube or change how sound travels in the ear canal, so any buildup is removed before we measure.

  2. Step 2

    Probe placement

We calibrate a thin, soft silicone probe tube, about one millimeter wide, and place it in your ear canal a few millimeters from the eardrum, alongside your hearing aid.

  3. Step 3

    Measurement

We play a calibrated speech signal at soft, average and loud levels and record your hearing aid’s output near the eardrum. Each result is compared with your prescriptive targets, calculated from your hearing test using a validated fitting formula.

  4. Step 4

    Fine-tuning

Where the output falls above or below target, we adjust your hearing aid’s programming and measure again. We also confirm that loud sounds stay within a safe, comfortable maximum. You’ll see the before and after results on screen.

What REM measures

Your ear canal, not an average one

Real Ear Measurement shows how much sound your hearing aids actually deliver at each pitch once they’re in your ear. The length, volume and shape of your ear canal, along with the fit of your dome or earmold, all change that amount.

That’s why two people with the same hearing test results, wearing the same hearing aid at the same settings, can receive noticeably different levels of sound. Fitting software uses average ear canal values. REM measures yours.

Signs it may be time for Real Ear Measurement

  • You bought hearing aids elsewhere and were never shown a measurement in your ear
  • Speech still sounds muffled, or too sharp, with your hearing aids in
  • Your own voice sounds boomy or hollow when you wear them
  • Your hearing has changed since your hearing aids were last programmed
  • You’d like a second opinion on hearing aids you already own

Why verification matters

When hearing aids are programmed, the manufacturer’s software creates a “first fit,” an estimate based on your hearing test and an average ear. Published studies have found that first-fit settings often fall short of prescriptive targets, most often in the higher pitches that carry speech clarity.

Real Ear Measurement replaces that estimate with a measurement. Jaysee is a HearingUp Certified Provider, and verifying every fitting with REM is part of the HearingUp best-practice standard. If your hearing aids are already on target, we’ll tell you, and nothing will be changed.

Questions we get at the front desk

Something else on your mind? Ask Grace or Francesca when you call.

Does it hurt?

No. The probe tube is soft silicone and rests in the ear canal without touching the eardrum. It takes a moment to place, and most people stop noticing it right away.

What should I bring?

Bring your hearing aids, your charger or spare batteries, and your most recent hearing test if you have one. If your hearing test is out of date, we may recommend a new one first, since your prescriptive targets are based on it.

Will you work on hearing aids I bought somewhere else?

Yes, it’s one of the things we do most. We can reprogram most major brands. Some hearing aids are locked by the original seller, so call us with the brand and model if you’re unsure.

How is this different from the fitting software?

The software predicts what an average ear canal should receive based on your hearing test. Real Ear Measurement records what your ear canal actually receives, and we program to that result.

What if my hearing aids are already on target?

Then we’ll tell you. You’ll see the measurement for yourself, and you’ll leave with nothing changed.

How often should it be repeated?

When your hearing aids are new, when your hearing changes, when your domes or earmolds are replaced, or when something doesn’t sound right. Otherwise, there’s no need.

What is a HearingUp Certified Provider?

A member of HearingUp, the network founded by Dr. Cliff Olson for hearing care providers who follow best-practice standards. Jaysee is a certified member, and verifying fittings with Real Ear Measurement is a central part of that standard.
