What to expect

How a home visit works

Home visits are for people who can’t easily get to our office. When you call, we’ll confirm whether we can reach your address and what the visit costs. Your visit then moves through four parts.

  1. Step 1

    Scheduling

Call us with the address and a little about the situation. We’ll confirm whether we serve your area and tell you the visit fee before anything is booked.

  2. Step 2

    Setup

Toni brings portable testing equipment, a video otoscope and fitting supplies. She’ll set up in the quietest room available, often a bedroom with the door closed, to reduce background noise during testing.

  3. Step 3

    Evaluation

Your visit includes the same consultation, ear exam, hearing test and review of results we provide in the office, with family welcome to join.

  4. Step 4

    Next steps

Some services require our sound booth or in-office equipment. If you need one of them, we’ll explain why and help you plan the next step.

Who asks for this

Often, it’s family who calls

Many home visit requests come from family members. A parent may have stopped driving, recently come home from the hospital, or live in assisted living without easy transportation.

Hearing loss shouldn’t go untreated because getting to an appointment is difficult. A home visit provides the same care in a more convenient setting, and having a family member present often makes it easier to understand the results and next steps.

Signs a home visit may be right for you

  • Getting out of the house is difficult, or has become difficult recently
  • A parent has stopped driving, and their hearing hasn’t been checked because of it
  • Hearing aids are sitting unused because no one has been able to get them checked
  • A family member is in assisted living or a rehabilitation stay
  • You’d prefer to have the conversation at home with family present

Why we make house calls

About half of adults age 75 and older have disabling hearing loss, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. For many people in this age group, getting to an appointment is one of the biggest obstacles to care.

That’s why we come to you. The consultation, ear exam, hearing test and review of results can all be done at home, and so can a hearing aid fitting. You’ll know the visit fee, and whether we can reach your address, before you book.

If an office visit would serve you better, we’ll tell you.

Questions we get at the front desk

What families ask before booking a visit for someone else.

What does a home visit cost?

There’s a fee for home visits, and we’ll tell you what it is when you call, before anything’s booked.

Do you come to my town?

Call with the address and we’ll give you a yes or no on the phone.

Is a test at home as good as one in the booth?

The sound booth is quieter than any bedroom, and that does make a difference. The portable equipment is still good enough to tell us what we need and to fit from. If something needs the booth, we’ll say so.

Can you visit an assisted living or rehab facility?

Yes, arranged with the facility ahead of time. Give us the name when you call and we’ll sort out access with them.

Can a family member be there?

We recommend it. A second person hears the results too, and that’s usually what makes the next steps happen.

Insurance

We accept many insurance plans. Bring your insurance card, and we’ll check your benefits for you.
