What to expect

What happens during a hearing test

Grace or Francesca will greet you at the front desk and get you settled. Your visit then moves through four parts.

  1. Step 1

    Consultation

We discuss your hearing history, overall health and the situations where hearing and communication are most difficult for you.

  2. Step 2

    Ear exam

We examine your ear canals and eardrums with an otoscope to check for earwax or anything else that should be addressed before testing.

  3. Step 3

    Hearing test

In our sound booth, you’ll complete a series of listening tests through headphones, including tones at different pitches and words presented in quiet and in background noise.

  4. Step 4

    Your results

We review your audiogram, a chart of your hearing across different pitches, and explain what your results mean for everyday communication. If your hearing is within normal limits, we’ll tell you.

What a hearing test measures

Pitch, loudness and speech

A hearing test measures the softest sounds you can hear at different pitches, typically ranging from low to high tones, in each ear.

Ours also measures how well you understand speech, both in quiet and in background noise, for a fuller picture of how you hear in everyday life.

Signs it may be time for a hearing test

  • People seem to mumble, and you keep asking them to repeat themselves
  • Conversations in restaurants or at family gatherings are hard to follow
  • Others say the TV is too loud
  • You hear a ringing, buzzing or humming that nobody else can
  • It’s been a while since your last test, or you’ve never had one

Why the hearing test comes first

Your audiogram shows the degree of any hearing loss, from mild to profound, and exactly which pitches are affected in each ear. That detail matters, because hearing loss rarely affects all pitches equally.

If hearing aids are recommended, your audiogram is the basis for the prescriptive targets we program them to. Without an accurate hearing test, a hearing aid can only be set to a generic starting point.

What the test includes

  • A review of your hearing and health history
  • An examination of both ears
  • Comprehensive testing in our sound booth
  • A detailed review of your audiogram
  • Recommendations, including whether hearing aids would help
  • Available in English or Spanish

Questions we get at the front desk

Something else on your mind? Ask Grace or Francesca when you call.

Is there a cost for the hearing test?

No. In-office hearing evaluations are complimentary for adults.

What should I bring?

Bring your insurance card if you have one, and your current hearing aids if you already wear them. Many patients also find it helpful to bring a family member or friend, since a second set of ears can help when we review your results.

What if it turns out to be earwax?

That’s usually good news. We examine your ears before testing for exactly this reason. If earwax is blocking your ear canal, we can remove it in our office and then complete your hearing test for accurate results.

What if I don’t need hearing aids?

Then we’ll tell you. Not every hearing concern calls for hearing aids, and our recommendations are based on your results. You’ll leave with a record of your hearing to compare against at future visits.

What happens after the test?

If your results show hearing loss, we’ll explain what it means for your communication and walk you through your treatment options, which may include hearing aids. You’re welcome to take the information home and decide when you’re ready.

Insurance

We accept many insurance plans. Bring your insurance card, and we’ll check your benefits for you.
