What happens at your hearing aid programming visit
When you call to book, ask for a patient transfer evaluation.
- Step 1
Hearing evaluation
We start with a comprehensive hearing evaluation in our certified sound booth to see where your hearing is today, since it may have changed since your last fitting.
- Step 2
Device analysis
We inspect your hearing aids for wear or damage, then use Electroacoustic Analysis (EAA) to confirm they are performing to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Step 3
Programming and verification
If your devices are working properly, we program them to your prescriptive targets and verify the results with Real Ear Measurement, and many patients hear the difference right away.
- Step 4
Your options
We explain your results and any adjustments we made. If your hearing aids are no longer working accurately or aren’t the recommended device for your needs, we’ll go over new options with you.

Why your hearing aids may not sound clear
Many hearing aids are programmed using the manufacturer’s first-fit settings, which are based on average ear acoustics. Real Ear Measurement shows what your hearing aids are actually delivering, so we can match your prescriptive targets.
Signs your hearing aids may need reprogramming
- Speech still sounds muffled, unclear or hard to follow
- Voices sound tinny, sharp or overwhelming in noisy places
- You’re not sure whether your fitting was verified with Real Ear Measurement

Why newer hearing aids may not need replacing
If your hearing aids are about three years old or newer, you may not need new technology. You may need the right level of care, service and programming.
Many of our patients come to us from large retail settings focused on quick sales and fittings. We follow comprehensive best practices, including Electroacoustic Analysis and Real Ear Measurement, to help you get more from the devices you already own.
Before your visit
Have another question? Call our office, and we’ll be happy to help.
Can you program hearing aids I bought somewhere else?
In many cases, yes. We work with leading hearing aid manufacturers, including Phonak, Oticon, ReSound, Signia, Starkey and Widex. Some devices are locked to the retailer that sold them, and we’ll let you know what’s possible.
What is Real Ear Measurement?
Real Ear Measurement uses a thin probe microphone in your ear canal to measure the sound your hearing aids deliver. It lets us verify your prescriptive targets objectively instead of relying on estimates.
Will reprogramming make my hearing aids clearer?
Results vary. If your devices are working properly, programming them to your prescriptive targets may improve clarity. Your evaluation helps us determine whether reprogramming or new technology is the better option.
What if my hearing aids can’t be reprogrammed?
If your devices are locked, no longer working accurately or not recommended for your hearing needs, we’ll explain your results and go over new options with you.
What should I bring?
Bring your hearing aids, their chargers or spare batteries, and your insurance card if you have one. Previous hearing test results or fitting records are also helpful. We also recommend bringing a spouse, family member or loved one.
We accept many insurance plans, and we’ll check your benefits for you.
